Hasan Korimullah is a 16 year old Rohingya refugee living in Chicago. His tragic experiences of fleeing the genocide in Burma represent what many Rohingya have suffered at the hands of the Burmese government. Resettling in America is a new start for Hasan and presents an opportunity to be part of a new community - a new family, but it may not be enough.

Coming Together follows two families: the Croughan’s and the O’Neill’s. As a combination of current day footage and memories, these families reflect and experience Chinese adoption in their own unique way. The Croughan family experiences adoption in the present, while the O’Neill family reminisces of the past. In the end, they all want one thing: to complete their family.

Josefino Paz came to the United States when he was 15 from his hometown in Mexico to make a better life for himself. Despite his success, his time in the States came with the price of feeling disconnected from his family and culture. Through the participation in the Fiesta Patronal in his hometown of San Juan Mixtepec, Oaxaca he felt reconnected and whole again. Now that he has returned, he must decide whether to leave his family and the life he created in the United States to return home to his roots in Oaxaca.

Greg Hopkins grew up in Rochester, N.Y. and had dreams of playing professional football. Greg has now started a community football program in Rochester and has worked with over 800 student-athletes. Balancing his own work, the community program, and his family takes a lot out of him but, “I’m not dead yet,” said Greg. “I can’t stop now.”

Enmanuel Ledesma is a 25-year-old Dominican immigrant who moved to the Bronx, N.Y. when he was six years old. After 18 years of living undocumented, Enmanuel is pursuing higher education, a boxing career, and military service in an attempt to make reparations for his adolescent mistakes and eventually gain citizenship.

In order to protect herself from fear and rejection, Tabitha Emo feels she must hide the most important part of herself. As an Army veteran, her willingness to serve continues at home as she helps take care of her step-father, J.R., and maintains the property. However her anxieties and uncertainties have become her reality as the unspoken tension in the family leaves her feeling alone and halts her from moving forward.
