Kate Lovering Honorable Mention Picture Story
Celina Carissimi of Geneva Boxing Team just after winning her 3rd title fight at the 30th annual New York State Silver Gloves boxing tournament in Rochester December 1, 2012. Celina Carissimi is a 3 time New York State Boxing Champion. She is also fifteen. Still learning who she is Celina is many conflicting things at the same time: she is tender and tough, cocky and demure, brazen and reserved. Without giving away too much she has expressed that her home life leaves much to be desired and through the Geneva Boxing Team she has found a second family; one that is reliable and maybe more understanding. At the gym she is the only female boxer, which allows her to be special. The Geneva neighborhood Celina is from is not one that rewards excellence or even being different so she is constantly walking a thin line of celebrating her accomplishments and staying true to her roots. As she grows and moves forward her challenge is navigating these nuanced situations. She is a person in flux; she’s fifteen.
