2014 What We Do

The 13th annual What We Do Competition and Exhibition was hosted by the RIT Student Chapter of the National Press Photographers Association on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Rochester Institute of Technology. This year’s judges, selected from among alumni of the school,  were Edmund Fountain freelance photojournalist based in New Orleans, Seth Gitner Assistant Professor at Syracuse University, and Max Schulte Assistant Photo Editor at the Democrat and Chronicle.

This year’s competition was sponsored by The Gitner Family, Nikon Professional Services, White House News Photographers Association, and the RIT School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.

Winning images will be displayed on the RIT campus at The Dyer Gallery in the National Technical Institute of the Deaf viewable from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Friday, April 25, at 6 p.m. there will be an Award Reception to recognize the winning images.

“My son is ashamed of me because I’m a drunk… You can’t blame him really… I’m not a bad person,” say Bradley Loce, 56, of Rochester, N.Y. Bradley has suffered from alcoholism since his early teens and has struggled with chronic homelessness. He currently lives in the Dorothy Day house which provides a “housing first” solution for people that live on the streets.
