2024 The Gitner Family Award Portfolio

The Gitner Family Award goes to a body of work that showcases a returning student photographer’s vision and demonstrates versatility, expertise, and depth.

May finished eighth in the B category, qualifying for the dual slalom race the next day. He stated, “I could’ve pushed myself a little harder.”

Westerlund is the founder and editor of Flower Power, a magazine whose mission is to document “cool shit in Rochester, N.Y.” Westerlund identifies the magazine as “a small publication that covers the people, places, projects, and organizations, that are under the radar of the mainstream media.”

KNEECAP hails from Belfast, Ireland, and they rap in both Gaelic and English. They are Irish Republicans, and often make politically motivated music addressing the British state, and imperialism in general.

Batman of San Jose is photographed after a day of outreach on Nov. 12, 2023, in Rochester, N.Y. Batman of San Jose is a student in Rochester. During his free time he does outreach work, bringing resources to those in need, mostly unhoused individuals, while dressed as Batman. He began this practice in his home city, San Jose, Calif. He built the suit himself, and started wearing it while helping the homeless community as a way to get more attention on a dire issue that he felt was being largely ignored.

This documentary short examines the graffiti writer Loner’s practice and thought process.
